Angel Torres knew he wanted to pursue a career in the culinary arts from the moment he first stepped into his culinary class at Long Island City High School. Working with his chef instructor, Angel quickly got involved with C-CAP where he volunteered and participated in many events which provided him with the opportunity to network and learn new techniques. According to Angel, “the most life changing event [he] participated in was C-CAP’s Annual Scholarship Competition” where he competed twice, once as a junior to get a feel of what to expect for senior year, and then again as a senior. True to form, practice makes perfect and Angel was awarded a $20,000 scholarship to The Culinary Institute of America, where he received an Associates Degree in Baking and Pastry Arts in July 2016.
Angel contributes his success to advice he received from a mentor who told him to believe in himself and trust his instincts. Now, a chocolatier working in FIKA’s Chocolate Production Kitchen, Angel wants to impart similar wisdom to current C-CAP students: “PUSH yourself and believe in yourself! No one can tell you or show you where your life will lead except yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself or push yourself to become better everyday, then you’re holding yourself back from what you can accomplish. Always strive to be better… to become better”. – Angel Torres, Chocolatier, FIKA
